Hi I'm Pete

I am an experienced and enthusiastic home chef with a love for cooking good food, especially fish as well being a fisheries biologist.  My web site name is inspired by my love of fish and in particular the Atlantic Mackerel (Scomber scombrus) that is not only one of my favourite fish to eat, it evokes fond memories of my childhood and reminds me of how I became so fascinated by fish.  I have a naturally curious mind and have tried many things but I always return, somehow, to the sea or rivers and fish related interests.

I guess I fell in love with fish related subjects through fishing and I recall fishing for Tench (Tinca tinca), Carp (Cyprinus carpio), Roach (Scardinius erythrophthalmus), Rudd(Rutilus rutilus), Perch (Perca fluviatilis) and Pike(Esox lucius) in Central Park in my home town of Chelmsford, Esssex, UK. I learnt to fly fish in Scotland where I lived for 10 years studying Salmon and Trout, specialising in juvenile salmonid population dynamics in the River Annan.  I also pioneered some early work on micro radio tagging of migratory and rare fish using radio tags, commonly used at that time for tracking birds.  Fly fishing gave me a whole new perspective on fishing and now I often saltwater fly fishing from my small boat for Sea Bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) as well as more conventional fly fishing for trout.

I cannot finish without speaking of Cornwall where I seem to spend every holiday and spare moment.  I have been going to Cornwall for fish and holidays for as long as can remember.  I may live there one day, but for now it remains a special place that I can go to relax, unwind and most importantly, go fishing!

New Challenges

In 2023 I completed my training as a professional chef (Chef Skills course) at Leith’s Cookery School, London to help build upon my years of mainly self-taught cooking.    Whilst I have been brewing beer using the “All grain” method for many years, to expand upon my knowledge I attended the WSET Level 2 Wine & Spirit Education Trust in Beer Level 2 in early 2024 and passed the exam with distinction.  I passed the Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD)  General Certificate in Brewing exam in October 2024.

Over the years I have also attended food courses at Rick Steins, River Cottage, Sydney Seafood School and Billingsgate, mostly in fish filleting and food cookery skills.   River Cottage used to run a course called “Catch and Cook” which was brilliant but sadly they have stopped doing that now.  When I went the class caught lots of Mackerel, a few Turbot off the Shambles bank, and Sea bream.   See the page on my “Food heroes” under the food section.
